The Travel Bug

Travelling for me started in June,1987 the year that my wife and I got married, my first trip
abroad was to Zante in the Ionian Islands of Greece. We went again in 1988, this time to
Kefalonia, but then all that stopped as we decided to start a family. In 1991 we decided to

As we now had a 4x4 it was inevitable that we would have to explore some off-road tracks. My appetite
for off-roading was satisfied by the tracks of the Albera Mountain region. I was now working at the Knoll
House Hotel in Studland, Dorset. Every season we had staff from all over the world working there.
There were Australians, New Zealanders, French, Spanish, Eastern Europeans, South Africans and

travel again, this time to France, driving. We booked through Sunsites for a two week break camping in tents that
were already pitched, all we had to do was to turn up. We stayed on three different camp sites, one on the west
coast, one on the Med. near to Montpellier and the other was at Dijon, this broke the long trip on the way down
south. Following that I was self-employed so there were no foreign holidays for several years. In 1998 we took our
next holiday abroad, this again was to France, with Eurocamp. This time we stayed on the west coast, the Vendee,
to keep the mileage down. The next time we ventured out of the country was in March of 2003, we booked with
Drive Alive on the Internet, this was our first holiday in the Discovery. We drove down through France into Spain
to a place called Llanca on the Costa Brava where we had booked an apartment for one week.

South Americans to name but a few. Working with these people made me realise
just how easy it is to travel these days. It was time to make some plans. 2004’s
travels started with a short trip to France, just three nights. Later that year though
we were to be departing on our first big adventure, we were going to the Saraha.

The reasons for this trip are
covered on the “Why” page,
but this was going to be our
first trip out of Europe.
Preparations for the Tunisian
trip had already started in
Julyof 2003, in that we had
provisionally booked with
Sahara Travel at the
Beaulieu 4x4 Show. I had
already started work on the
vehicle in order to prepare it
for the journey, but there
was still a lot to do.
